Our Story

How We Got Started

The Bloom Foundation for Maternal Wellness was born out of a lifelong friendship and a shared passion for supporting new mothers.

Lisa Tremayne and Shannon Hayes have been best friends since the 7th grade. After going through high school, college, and even living together, their 40+ year bond was about to spark something truly special.

In 2017, Lisa had already made huge strides in maternal mental health as the founder of New Jersey’s first Center for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) through the Monmouth Hospital System. But she had a vision to help even more mothers struggling with the challenges of new parenthood.

That’s when Shannon, who lives in Washington State, came to visit Lisa for one of their regular “Mom Walks.” As Lisa shared her aspirations to expand her work beyond her job, Shannon’s three decades of experience in helping startups and small businesses grow proved invaluable.

What was supposed to be a short visit turned into weeks of detailed planning and passionate strategizing between the two friends. They drew up the blueprint for a new nonprofit that would increase access to perinatal mental health education and support on a wider scale.

And just like that, the Bloom Foundation was created from the bonding experience of motherhood and the enduring power of friendship.

Where We Are Now

From those initial conversations between two lifelong friends, the Bloom Foundation has blossomed into a powerful maternal mental health advocacy force.

What began with just Lisa and Shannon has expanded into a team of volunteers lending their voices to educate mothers and medical professionals about perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs).

Bloom has created vital resources to help healthcare providers identify and address PMADs, including specialized training workshops. The Peer-to-Peer Facilitator Training equips PMAD survivors to lead their own support groups through immersive learning.

Understanding the power of lived experience, Bloom empowers women to “pay it forward” by guiding others through challenges they’ve faced. Trainees gain the skills to create and lead local peer support groups with ongoing guidance.

What started between two compassionate friends has flourished into a comprehensive network of education, resources and support for mothers and families. Bloom continues ensuring no woman journeys through parenthood alone.
